i wish i could hurt you the way you hurt me. but i know if i had the chance, i wouldn't do it. “ The older leader grunted as he climbed yet another bridge the clan had constructed between the buildings they used for their camp. The apprentices' den was so close, he could almost feel the cool interior as opposed to the hot sun beating down on his monochromatic patched fur as it bounced off the abundance of glass in the territory and camp surrounding him. He sighed heavily, before a small smile crossed his features, and he placed his front paws on the edge of the balcony ledge that led into the small wrecked studio apartment the cats had made into a den. Using a claw, he pulled lightly at the loose Fire escape window they used as a den, and poked his head inside, coughing once at the disturbed dust his paws stirred up, and looking for his new apprentice, Tinypaw. He hadn't taken the young tom out yet to "see the town" as they called it in Riftclan, because he had been busy with the mess with Reaper and the Gang in Emerald City, and other issues that were generally tied with getting a clan up and running again. With Riftstar's disappearance, and the small growing clan hounding him for answers, his patience had been stretched quite thin, and his nerves frazzled. He looked around the den a second time, and decided to step fully in, listening to the light window clatter shut behind him, signifying that the darker, cooler area would be closed off to the hot dry winds swirling around outside. He let his gaze wander the dim den, searching the soft mounds they used as nests for a reddish form. "Tinypaw? Are you in here?"He called out with his rumbling tone, his yellow eyes gleaming against the monotone buzzing sound coming from the various battery-powered appliances that still worked just enough to vibrate slightly, assaulting his ears with the irritating sound. He flicked them, before sitting down, settling to wait for a reply to his inquiry. ” notes "Talking"'Thought' "Others talking"

It seemed like a good idea yesterday He hadn't been an apprentice all that long, it had probably been one of the most exciting days of his life, getting named and accepted as more than a scrawny little hobbling kit, his apprenticeship had come later than the others born around the same time as him, mostly because his kithood had been so hit or miss as to his chances of even surviving, much less his capabilities with only three legs. But his mother had been insistent and adamant about his abilities, he wasn't as strong as the other kits, and he would always be one step behind, but she saw things that other hadn't seen, and she'd never been satisfied giving up on her only son, so with encouragement he'd thrived, he'd earned his place here and he was eager to show the entire clan what he could do.
The sound of the window pulled the apprentice into immediate alert, and his head popped up from his nest before his mossy eyes rested on the leader, his mentor, "Witheredstar!" He chirped out a startled reply, pulling himself into a standing position, trying not to stumble over his own still bleary paws as he went to meet the tom halfway, bushy tail flicking with a curious curl, "I didn't oversleep did I?" He looked to see if there were any others sleeping inside the den, letting out a relieved sigh when he noticed at least one or two others, a relief, he would have died had he overslept.
His ears flicked back towards his leader before he turned his eyes back to the tom, "are we going out?" His tail twitched and trembled with excitement, eagerness to see their territory buzzing through him...Or maybe that was the electricity...It was hard to tell sometimes. Either way, the prospect of getting to see his home was more than enough to pull him from the bleary grip of just waking up, into a much more bright eyed and bushy tailed energy.

i wish i could hurt you the way you hurt me. but i know if i had the chance, i wouldn't do it. “ Tinypaw's sleep-filled startled tone relaxed Witheredstar's expression into a soft smile, and his muscles unclenched, his scarred pelt flattening over steely muscles and sharp bones. He watched as his three-legged apprentice surveyed the surroundings and muttered to himself, and grinned wider when the young tom relaxed upon seeing the still bodies of his sleeping clanmates still residing in the den that morning. A chuckle clawed its raspy way out of his throat, but sounded more like a deep roll of thunder than a sound of amusement, and the old scarred leader flicked his aging tail as he waited for Tinypaw to make his way across to his patchy form.
"Are we going out?"
The question made Witheredstar cough out another laugh, and the older cat nodded, turning and flicking Tinypaw's ear with his tail lightly.
"Yes. I decided it was time to take you to, eh, see the town. Might as well show you early in the morning. Maybe we'll get some hunting practice in as well."
The leader couldn't help but wonder if he would be strong enough to train the lively youngster. Sure, he was still fighting fit, and fully aware of... most... of his actions, but he was also aging quickly, and he knew his retirement was eminent... though he didn't have a deputy to fall back on once it happened. Ah well, he supposed he could always fall back on Dovefrost, or Tigershade to help. They were younger and more fit... but for now the old leader would push his aging bones to provide Tiny with the best he could offer. The most he'd have to do is transfer the apprenticeship to another warrior if it was too much.
His pride would protest, though.
Withered nosed out of the creaking window and back into the searing heat, feeling as though the sun had somehow gotten hotter just to singe his fur off. He let out a cross huff, and turned back to Tinypaw, whom he presumed was following close behind.
"So. Where do you want to go first? I'm sure your mother has told you tales of the territories. Queens often do."
He said gently, his yellow eyes shining with wisdom and age, and also with a fatigue only leaders and elders knew. He felt his reign ending, but he would go out with a bang for sure, even if all he had to give was Tinypaw's name in the end, he was sure the little three-legged tom would be good for the territories in his own way. ” notes "Talking"'Thought' "Others talking"

It seemed like a good idea yesterday He didn't care how old the tom was, he'd been overjoyed that his leader of all cats had chosen him as his apprentice, he worried often that maybe it had been simply because no other wanted him, but those thoughts and feelings were mostly gone from his mind, it didn't matter what any other warrior or apprentice thought, the leader had chosen him, and that was enough to drive him to fight and grow into a warrior that the old tom could be proud of. He laughed when the tail was flicked over his ear, the long tufted appendage twitched in response."Early is best because the full heat of the day hasn't set in yet, right? Plus everything's waking up, so prey will be bleary and slow."He never fully saw the age of the leader showing, the wide eyed optimism of youth kept him more focused on the immediate moment rather than the future, it was only sometimes that he would dwell on these things, curled up in his nest ready to go to sleep, his mind tended to wander when it had nothing else to focus on. He glanced up when he saw Witheredstar turning to leave the den, following behind him with a peppy if not slightly off-gait pace. He scrambled out through the window after him, pondering on the question for a moment."The borders maybe? Mother always tells me it's important to know them by heart." He was also curious to glimpse across those invisible scent lines, into the world outside of his own territory, even when he was in the nursery he'd always wondered what the other clans might be like, apart from the stories he heard whispered between cats, stories he was sure were most likely exaggerated and biased, he wondered what stories other cats told of Riftclan too...He was often told that he was far too curious for his own good when he voiced these things, and perhaps he was, but it didn't stop the wondering."Words" - 'thoughts'

i wish i could hurt you the way you hurt me. but i know if i had the chance, i wouldn't do it. “ "The borders maybe? Mother always tells me it's important to know them by heart."
The old tom nodded, squinting into the sunlight and picking his way across to the roof of a short bakery, where the center of camp was located. The ledge he called everyone together was visible above them, connected to his tall glass den, and the freshkill pile--though it was quite low--could be seen situated in almost the dead center of the bakery, underneath a tin twoleg contraption to keep the heat and sun off of the prey and preserve it longer.
The leader glanced back at his apprentice again, before twitching his tail at the camp entrance, a stone-built archway through a broken down building that was taller than the Bakery, with twoleg grates pulled across, ready to be drawn back by the guards to let the two leave.
"Ready? We'll hit the Kestrelclan border that rests against the old crumbling Thunderpath, and follow the path along to hit our other border with Pondclan. I'd take you to the Gang border but... I'm not on exactly good terms with Reaper and that Sylvester character is dangerous, I don't want you getting hurt."
He rumbled out his thoughts as the guards pulled away the 'gates' for the two to leave, and stepped onto the ramp the clan had made to lead from the camp once they settled here. He looked back at Tinypaw with a smile, and chuckled.
"Don't worry about the gang, Tinypaw. I'll handle that young'in shecat that leads it, or die keeping you all safe. You can trust me on that."
He rasped out, turning so that the rat bites littering the left side of his pelt wouldn't be in view of his apprentice any longer. He hated how feeble he looked in his eyes. No longer the strong, regal leader he was when he took Riftstar's place. And what was worse, he was on his final life, since he was only given eight to accommodate the one Riftstar left the clan with. His teeth gritted together. No one in the clan knew that he didn't receive all nine lives, so most thought he was on his 8th life and he had his 9th, not that he was on his 8th and that it was his final. He let a sigh blow from his maw, and blinked away the aches and pains old age brought, before waiting at the base of the ramp for his young companion so that they could begin the patrol. ” notes "Talking"'Thought' "Others talking"

It seemed like a good idea yesterday His steps were eager as he followed close after his leader, taking in the sight of the camp while they were elevated above it on the rooftops. He could see cats milling about in the early morning, just beginning to stretch and properly wake up, unbunching muscles and kinks to start the day proper. He followed the older tom down through the way from the apprentice den over the roof of the bakery, which even long abandoned seemed to linger with the sweet smells of whatever was done there before. He craned his neck to take in the arches of the entryway, glancing to Witheredstar as he gestured for the entrance to be opened, ears flicking to attention when the old tom croaked out his words."Born ready."His voice was a confident purr, but something in the leader's words caught his attention, and he tilted his head to the side as he followed along behind him, curiosity in his mossy eyes."Should we anticipate any attacks? If it's bad enough that you don't want to take me around there...What kinda cats are these Gang cats anyway?"He found his fur prickling with the desire to know more, though he wasn't entirely sure if it was his place to know, the want to learn was still there, an almost unbearable calling to the young tom. He wasn't necessarily worried about an all out scrap with these Gang cats, he was confident that his clan could take anyone, but it was good to know your enemy, if they were enemies...He still wasn't sure. His response to that assurance was a chuckle and a flick of his tail."Whaat me? Worried? Please. I live for danger!"His tone was half joking, half overplayed sarcasm, he wasn't all that scared of those cats, but he also wasn't stupid enough to be entirely self confident about his abilities to take them on, but he enjoyed being theatrical."Those Gang cats should be scared of me."He curled his tail as he followed his leader up the ramp, coming to stop at his side as he looked up at him with serious eyes for a moment."of course I trust you, I'll always trust you.""Words" - 'thoughts'

i wish i could hurt you the way you hurt me. but i know if i had the chance, i wouldn't do it. “ "Should we anticipate any attacks? If it's bad enough that you don't want to take me around there...What kinda cats are these Gang cats anyway?"
The tom-leader shook his head at his apprentice, starting off towards the Kestrelclan border with his apprentice in tow, weaving through the abandoned, overgrown city rising around them.
"No, at least, not for now... They're a messy bunch, but held tightly together under the ironclad hold of that shecat running the bunch. Her name is Reaper, I believe she did something to gain such heavy loyalty so quickly, but I haven't pried. She's a little thing, but don't mess with her if you see her. She's a small black-red shecat with bright yellow eyes. I don't want you getting hurt."
He looked around, comfortable with the easy pace the two were taking. They would easily get through only half of the borders today, and should be back by sunhigh at the latest, even if his curious apprentice bombarded him with questions as they went. The silence was easy for a second, but the old leader chuckled at his apprentice's words afterwards
"Whaat me? Worried? Please. I live for danger!"
"I'm sure you do, young Tinypaw. But danger lives in you as well, and danger living within often makes us blind to danger that is legitimately dangerous to us. Do you understand my words?"
The leader barely had the time to take a breath before the younger tom started up again, making a small smile grow warily on Witheredstar's face.
"Those Gang cats should be scared of me."
The leader smiled and shook his head, sighing softly.
"Your bravery is noted and appreciated, young Tinypaw, but please don't underestimate our neighbors. Reaper might not be very big, but she alone could probably dispatch you, me, and three of our best warriors with naught a flick of her claws. That's not even mentioning her deputy, Sylvester."
He said, a tired tone coating is words as the buildings around their forms dwindled and merged into trees as they approached the border and got closer. His last words about trust stung his tongue pleasantly, and he waited in pleasant silence for Tiny's reply, which came sooner than he expected.
"of course I trust you, I'll always trust you."
Witheredstar blinked in surprise and looked at the young tom right as their pads touched the crumbling thunderpath facing the border with the clan situated in a meadow. The long grass on the other side sprung up in parts of the thunderpath and tickled the old tom's trailing paws as he looked up, speechless for the first time in their conversation.
"I... I don't know what to say. Thank you. I'm happy to know that my clanmates place their trust in me still, even though I've failed to peacefully negotiate with Reaper and Sylvester."
He sighed softly, shaking his head and stopping on the border.
"Anyways. This is the border we share with Kestrelclan. They don't stir up much trouble, but they do tend to taunt us at gatherings, which is unnerving. They're not the nicest characters, but we try to not have to deal with them."
He rumbled out, blinking softly at the border before looking at Tinypaw again.
"Any questions brewing in that curious brain of yours, Tinypaw?" ” notes "Talking"'Thought' "Others talking"
" Sorry for the lateness, Hic.
