Berry trekked through the crinkly leaf-litter scattered around his paws as he reluctantly travelled to the Gathering Place, his pelt hanging off of his bones. He looked bony and underfed. Nervous thoughts kept flashing through his mind. It was rare to see the small tricolour tom venture out to mingle with other cats - there were hardly any to talk to even if he did want to socialise - but he had decided to try. Just for today. Maybe tomorrow. The main reason was that he was facing food problems, and he suspected perhaps that another cat could share some helpful tips, but even if they couldn't it would be nice to have a friend. Hunger rumbled in his belly as he imagined sinking his jaws into a warm, plump mouse, and for a moment he forgot where he was. Walking, half-starved, to the Gathering Place, to look for hunting tips. Funny.
He slowly roamed over to his destination, before sitting down and self-consciously grooming his chest fur and paws. What if a clan cat came? Well, they had no business to come here and tell him what to do. Still, he was nervous as he waited. The cool Leaffall breeze drifted softly through his pelt, and the branches of the trees swayed lightly. It was surprisingly peaceful here. Maybe he would sit here for a while anyways.

The two shecat sisters slipped into the gathering spot, glancing around. The orange and white cats looked around warily, before spotting the tom and shifting lower to the ground.
"I'm not sure who he is..." The larger one, with bicolored eyes whispered to her smaller sister. The two were small and young, but they weren't stupid. They had come here to hunt on the other side of the gathering spot, where the prey was more plentiful than the spot that many loners packed into. The group of loners the two had left were skinny and scrawny, and they were tired of being that way. The sisters tried edging around Berry, but Fox caught his eye, giving him a long look, her muscles stiffening.

Berry flinched as he noticed two small figures edging around him, and his hackles raised instantly, his claws instinctively unsheathing. But, his fur soon flattened as he realised what they were. Kits? What were they even doing out here? Didn't they have parents? And why did he get scared by them? They looked old enough - maybe their home wasn't far away from here. He didn't recognise the two sisters though. "W-who are you?" he stammered - he was still embarrassed that he had been startled by two kits. His eyes met the larger ones, and he locked his stare with hers - though his eyes reflected shock and worry more than anger. He felt self-conscious more than anything - had they seen him absently staring into nothing, adrift in his thoughts, even though his bones jutted out of his pelt? How humiliating it would be to have them notice that. Even if they were just little kits.

Fox's bicolored eyes flashed as he spoke, and Holly's head whipped around fearfully, her body edging behind her sister's.
"We're harmless to you, sir. We just want to hunt. I'm Fox, and this is Holly, my sister." Fox said cautiously, her pelt slightly bristling in alarm that they had been confronted so easily. She backed up, her fur brushing against Holly's and looked up at Berry, the size difference almost alarming. She swallowed quietly, hoping to keep her pelt on her body and not get herself killed by the older, larger tom.

Berry felt a stab of guilt as he saw the fearful expressions of the two sisters. "D-don't worry. I don't b-bite." The tom attempted to purr, but it came out more like a stutter. "I-I should probably hunt too. So-sorry for interrupting you." He edged away carefully, beckoning the two kits forward with his tail. Why was he acting like they were giant, battle-scarred dogs who were trying to pass through? He hoped they hadn't noticed how scrawny and weak he looked, and nervously lifted his large, bushy tail to cover most of his body. Wait, that looks stupid. He lowered his tail. You're moving your tail too much. Berry shook off his thoughts for a moment, instead focusing on the kits. He hated acting like such a mouse-brain because his head couldn't make up his mind.

Fox lifted her ears curiously and noticed Berry's ribs poking through his fur. Her heart melted a bit, he was in the same situation as they were. She sighed, stepping forward, her sister following, and starting past him, biting her lip. Finally, she gave in, and turned back to him, ignoring his tail's movement. It was irrelevant, after all.
"Do you... do you want to accompany us? Three noses smell better than two, after all.." She asked awkwardly, giving him a weak smile. Holly looked at Fox in alarm, but trusted her older sister, and eventually gave the tom a smile of her own.

Berry was startled again as the larger kit, Fox, offered to go hunting with him. It was a very polite gesture, considering their age. They were quite mature. "W-well, if you want me to.." he murmured, before softly nodding his head. He wasn't planning to actually go hunting with somebody, but he guessed it was a good start. Who do you think you are, leeching off a few kits! They need it more than you, foxheart! He got to his paws meekly, returned the kits' smiles, and stared into the direction they were heading. It was pretty clever, to be honest. No wonder you couldn't think of it.

Fox smiled gently, and nodded, feeling kind of bad for the tom. However, he would help them in two ways. Larger groups usually kept scavenging, foxhearted loners away from them, and kept their meal safe. Usually, some older cat would come steal their fresh-caught meal. Fox hoped that Berry would keep them slightly safer, since he was older and a bit bigger than them. Holly pricked her ears, and offered Berry a warm smile of her own, trusting her sister's judgment of character.
