Russetflight The day had dragged on and felt like an eternity before evening had come. The Bay cat had found herself busy with helping with patrols, hunting, and handling things around camp, nothing she hadn't done before and found herself exhausted. But, with moonhigh approaching she still found herself restless and unable to sleep, just curled up in her nest staring at the wall of the den. Even the warm, sleeping bodies around her did not help lull Russetflight to sleep, but made her all the more restless. Carefully, she finally pushed her taller frame up and made her way over the sleeping bodies of her clanmates and pushed herself out of the warriors den, feeling the cramps from being curled up slowly pop as she moved. Being out in the open brought some relief, causing her to sigh as her form relaxed and she stepped out into the clearing that was cast in moonlight from the moon being at its highest. Her gaze for a moment went towards the big orb in the sky, wondering if any Soulclan cats were watching them right about now. But, such thoughts didn't linger as she glanced around camp, which was rather quiet right now at this time of night. What exactly did one do so late? She wasn't interested in hunting at the moment but training did sound good, though she also didn't want to disturb the one put on guard duty that night. Unable to think of anything at the moment, Russetflight sat off to the side, staring towards the stars in wonder, considering her options until she heard movement, causing her to turn to find the source. The tom pushed his way out from the warriors den after the shecat. He had seen her tossing and turning in her nest, which was next to his. Her movement had kept his closed eyes and tired head from getting any rest, so he decided to try and figure out what was wrong with his clanmate.
"Russetflight?"
He called, suppressing a yawn as he blinked rapidly, trying to drive sleep away from his eyes.
"What are you still doing up? Are you alright?"
He asked, shaking his head in another attempt to wake up further. He was genuinely curious--he couldn't say he was concerned for his clanmate's issues, because he generally doesn't care for anyone but himself--but he was curious, so he decided that going and talking to her would do more to sedate his curiosity that speculating to himself in the dark silence of the warriors den would do.

Russetflight
The source of the noise? It belonged to one of her fellow warriors who seemed to push their way out of the den shortly after herself, and it took a moment for Russetflight to make out who it was. With the shadows being cast upon them it was hard to tell until they spoke. That voice belong to none other than Redlight, " I didn't realize I woke you Redlight, sorry about that." Alright so maybe she wasn't the quiet restless type. But it wasn't like this was her first time not being able to sleep, and it probably would not be her last, not since she joined the clan so many moons ago. Sometimes it felt like an eternity that she would ever get to the next moon, half expecting her clanmates to turn her away. Because she had to admit there were times she felt more out of place, mainly from her seemingly freakish size and appearance compared to any other clan cat. " I just can't sleep is all. I've tried staring at the den wall and counting squirrels in my mind, but none of that is helping." Russetflight spoke quietly, not wanting to disturb others in camp. Tags: Redlight Notes: N/A

"I didn't realize I woke you Redlight, sorry about that."
The tom shrugged, a yawn already escaping his maw. He didn't mind being awoken, and he wasn't the type to snap at a clanmate for kicking him once in a while. It happened, they all had their days--er, nights, and no other could fault them for it. He opened his mouth to reassure the shecat, but she seemed lost in thought as she recalled her night of unsuccessful sleep. He saw the doubts and worries swim in her eyes, and shook his shoulder fur slightly to resettle it. He didn't often talk to the other cats in his clan unless he personally benefited from it, but he understood her situation, so he would make an exception.
Just this once, though.
"I just can't sleep is all. I've tried staring at the den wall and counting squirrels in my mind, but none of that is helping."
Redlight nodded, stifling another yawn quickly and stretching.
"What's got you so worked up that you can't sleep?"
He rumbled, observing his clanmate closer. He was lucky he was part Maine coon, and therefor slightly bigger than normal cats, otherwise Russetflight would tower over him rather than just be slightly taller. He had prided himself in being the biggest in the clan until she came along, but he didn't mind the aesthetics much. They never really benefited him anyway. He settled down on his haunches, all hopes of going back inside and sleeping again quickly dashed from his mind as he settled in for the long haul, making up his mind to listen to her troubles, if only for his personal gain later on.

Russetflight
Russetflight almost seemed uncertain of telling Redlight what troubled her so often. He had never struck her as being one to listen and be sympathetic to one's concerns. To be honest, she had never thought him much of a talker in general except for maybe a few here and there in the clan, and his family of course, other than that he seemed to keep to himself.
Though she herself didn't mind talking and boasting whenever opportunity presented itself, it seemed rather...out of place to speak of her troubles. Those troubles dealt with her past, nightmares plaguing her sleep of the long ride in the giant flying, metal monster from her homeland to there and being stuck in a cage with her siblings. She could still recall them after so many moons but she could never stop the wonder if they were in safe homes, had good lives, better lives than perhaps what they had as kits. Maybe one of them were running wild like herself or had a good, loving twoleg she and Dune once had before her untimely passing.
"I just have been...plagued by nightmares, that is all. I had some the night before and I guess it's just been lingering." Russetflight finally spoke, not entirely wanting to share her true troubles without him or others assuming she was missing her old life. She didn't in the least, but there were some memories that lingered, especially those of her brother, Dune.
After a few moments of silence she finally added, "Do you...ever worry about your family Redlight? If you ever lost them or found yourself separated from them for possibly ever?" She inquired carefully, seeming to be cautious about her question. But, there was a genuine curiosity behind her words. "I just have been...plagued by nightmares, that is all. I had some the night before and I guess it's just been lingering."
He gave her a grim nod, his cool, confident smirk breaking into a deep frown that marred his features. He licked his lips, and sighed heavily, closing his eyes briefly.
'She doesn't want to tell you because she doesn't trust you, mousebrain.'
His mind growled at him, and he shook his head slightly before reopening his pale green eyes, and meeting her gaze once more. He smiled and shook his head, letting out a small puff of air again.
"No, I understand completely. I've had those days too, trust me."
His mind scoffed at him for his choice of words, and he cursed inwardly again, forcing a calm exterior over his features. He only had Doegaze left, and she had run away from him to join another clan long ago. He wasn't even sure where she had gone, as the clans hadn't met for their first gathering yet. He thought she would join Kestrelclan with him and Dawnwhisker when they got to the territories, but his blind sister had flitted off, leaving her siblings to themselves. For Soulclan's sake, she could be a tribe cat at this point, no one knew. At least he didn't.
He broke himself from his daze when Russetflight started her stressed out talking again, and focused back on his clanmate. Even he knew it was rude to tune someone out when you had asked them a question.
"Do you...ever worry about your family Redlight? If you ever lost them or found yourself separated from them for possibly ever?"
He hesitated. No one in Kestrelclan knew about Doegaze. Barely anyone knew about Dawnwhisker--Dawnstar as she was known last--and he generally tried to keep his older sister out of the light she had in their clan after she died. He knew that most who had come as kits or apprentices listened to her stories in the Elder's den, however, so he couldn't totally ignore her around others, but he could keep his youngest sister out of this. Doegaze was already hurting, not being able to ever see what she, or anyone else looked like. She never got to see her mother's eyes or her father's smile, and she never got to see Redlight's red fur he was so infamous for.
So the Kestrelclan warrior kept his unknown sister out of every clan interaction he had.
Throughout his thought process, none of it showed on his face. And he strove to keep it that way, not even batting an eyelash at her question. But... If he was asking for trust, he should give her some collateral to have him with, in return.
That is how these things worked... right?
"I... Have, I guess. My family is all dead, except my little sister Doegaze, who is Soulclan-knows-where. And.. I had to watch my eldest sister Dawnwhisker--Dawnstar die in front of me. My parents also died protecting us from foxes on our journey, so I guess I've had my fair share of... loss."
He pushed out with difficulty, frowning as he struggled to confide his most guarded secrets to a near-stranger. He didn't dislike Russetflight, he just didn't know her much, but he would admit that you had to give to get, so he hoped he had given enough for her trust to be given.

Russetflight The long legged, russet colored Bay cat gave the tom a nod when he remarked about nightmares, giving him a slight nod. "I suppose everyone gets those sort of nights sometimes. Guess they bother me sometimes." She admitted, giving her chest fur a quick lick, feeling awkward with revealing such things that were trivial seemed to bother her at all. Sometimes, those lingering nightmares made her fur prickle with worry or fear, always plagued with the thoughts of what happened with her brother, and lately to her other siblings as well. They were not among the clans either, far as she knew, but that didn't mean she was going to forget her kin as if they didn't exist.
When he hesitated to answer, she couldn't help turning her gaze to peer at him. Redlight seemed hesitant, perhaps even uncertain if she was reading his body language right. Maybe she had caught him off guard with such a forward question? Maybe it could be considered prying to a point in fact. Admittedly, she could be rather forward at times, and often she wasn't ashamed to be but in this matter she might have overstepped herself in asking such a question. Just as she opened her jaws to tell him he didn't have to reply if he didn't feel like it, the red pelted warrior was soon answering her inquiry before she could get a single word out, causing her to close her jaws to listen closely.
It was her turn to frown and showed signs of sympathy for the losses he had gone though, wondering just how deeply they really affected the tom. Not everyone was affected by such loss however, so it was hard to figure out if he was truly affected by such at all. "I had a family once, before I joined the clans." Russetflight finally spoke, her tone soft and her expression becoming wistful, eyes seeming to look through the tom into the distant forest around the camp. "I wasn't originally from this land-me and my siblings are actually from some place very far away, across the big salt lake. We were taken from our parents, barely old enough to leave our nest and all I remember is once being locked up before me and my brother, Dune, were kept as pets. I sometimes can't help worrying about them, where they are, if they're safe." Russetflight shook her head, seeming to return to the present once more and showing a narrowed, hard expression on her face. "But I know I cannot change what has happened either, only thank Soulclan for guiding my paws to a new home, perhaps to where I was meant to be."
Truth be told, Russetflight didn't really know where her destiny lies. Every paw step of the way had led her right to the clans who had taken her in and she had felt at home in Kestralclan, although she wouldn't lie that a part of her felt called to the waters at times. Not that she would ever admit that part.

rΡdlΓght I make myself out to be an angel, but you'll find me just a devil capped in gold TAG: @tundra . WORDS: 370. NOTES: "Red Speech" 'red thought' Redlight nodded again, before stopping himself, wrinkling his nose. He had been nodding a lot lately. Sighing, he turned to shift his paws across the dirt underfoot, the encampment in the hollow echoing every movement softly.
"I'm sure you know what you want. And, I'm not one to condone ditching your clan, but... I know what it's like to yearn for another place. So... If you're ever unhappy here, don't be afraid of leaving us behind. We need warriors that know they belong here, because hesitation could get us all killed. Echostar will understand, and I'm sure Mothflight and Stagstep will too."
His voice was gruff, and slightly cold, detached. He meant every word he said, too. Not to be mean at all, or cold, but because he had personally witnessed such hesitation get a lot of those he knew killed. He was intimately familiar with the concept, and he wasn't about to give that a second chance to repeat history.
Russetflight was a valuable warrior to Kestrelclan, that fact was indisputable. But she held more value with her entire faith, rather than at just face value. HE wasn't one to actually be able to say it that eloquently, however, so he supposed saying it like he had would work just fine. As long as the point got across, they would be just fine.
He didn't want to lose any clanmates, he enjoyed the company of most of them... even if he never showed that fact, and it made him irritated and agitated when one died or left, as he was sure it did you all of his clan. Driving her away was not his goal, but he needed her to see. Sighing, he frowned again, rolling his eyes before speaking again.
"Look, you're a nice kid, and I really don't mean to say you need to leave, I've just had past experience with hesitation, and it ain't pretty. Not at all. No one wins when hesitation enters the mix. It's just a whole lotta grief and unnecessary death."
His miniature speech was followed by a sigh, and a shake of his pelt. He watched her closely, unsure as to how she would really take his attitude towards the subject.

Russetflight When Redlight spoke next, she couldn't help staring at him in shock at what he seemed to be implying. Did the tom really think she would abandon Kestralclan just like they were nothing? She could understand from his experience that such things could be tragic or infuriating, that much she could understand but it was another thing to imply that someone from outside the clan would do the same. Her slight self-consciousness kicked in at that moment without her thinking.
"Not everyone is your kin Redlight," Russetflight growled slightly, keeping enough calm to keep her tail from lashing from her anger. True, she would always miss her family since they had been separated from so many moons and there was no telling what had happened to them by now. Heck, she couldn't even for sure say Dune had gotten away from the twoleg that had tried to grab for them when they took off. "I know where my loyalties lie, and I owe Kestralclan everything for giving me a second chance at freedom. Maybe if you tried to show to know your clanmates a little more you wouldn't have such a thought." She had narrowed her gaze to a glare and gave a decisive lash of her tail before she turned to head towards the camp entrance.
Was mentioning his kin going a little far? Maybe. But the nerve of her fellow clanmate implying that her loyalties were in question with just mentioning her own kin was just as bad in her opinion. She had been giving her all to the clan since they found her those moons ago and allowed her to a chance to become one of them despite her past and being so different from the questing cats a season or so ago. What nerve did he exactly have to say her loyalty was in question when one of his kin may not even be among the clans at all? She at least knew her brother would have supported her not take off like a coward like Redlight's own blind sister as he told her.
"Guess some cats can't be convinced." The she-cat thought as she pushed her way through the tunnel that led out of camp, nodding to the one on guard as she headed into the surrounding forest to take a walk rather than waste her time with the red furred warrior. rΡdlΓght I make myself out to be an angel, but you'll find me just a devil capped in gold
TAG: @tundra . WORDS: 362. NOTES: NOTES HERE
The tom bit his tongue when she mentioned his family, his fur warming with anger. He usually enjoyed the russet colored shecat's company. She had a unique outlook on life not many shared, but this time... she had taken his words at face value again, without bothering to try and read between the lines a bit. His face contorted a bit, before he stood and shook his pelt, intent on following his clanmate.
Even though he felt as if it should be the other way around, he prowled after her, ears low and eyes watchful, nodding at the warrior trusted to hold down the entrance through the night as he trailed after her vanishing tail. He would apologize. He hated having to deal with drama, so clearing this bit with Russetflight benefited him more later than the minor sting to his pride would take now.
The tom couldn't help but ponder her words over himself, knowing that by mentioning his family, she was talking about Doegaze, the only breathing relative he had left. This made his blood boil a bit, and he couldn't help but wonder what her reaction would be to find her precious brother a gang cat or a murderous rouge. His sister might have grieved be escaping, but at least he knew her well enough to know she couldn't stand anywhere but the clans.
The red furred warrior finally caught up, and jogged lightly beside Russetflight, a frown still stuck to his features, but his mind giving in and making him smooth things over with her.
"Listen, Russetflight. Obviously you took my words a little hard, and not at all how I intended you too, so... I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry I overstepped my... limits a bit. But mentioning a guy's family, when he only has one more living is just... kind of mean. You know?"
He spoke gruffly, not turning to look at her, and instead focusing out in front of the two. He knew he was probably going to upset her again.... but it was worth the shot to clear the air, even if his ego and pride were literally rolling down the drain at that moment.

Russetflight She heard him majority of the time she walked, trying to ignore the red furred warrior's presence. She figured maybe he would eventually leave her be and return to camp or go find another way to cool off just as she was trying to. Perhaps she was expecting too much, had pushed too much, but at the same time she couldn't help feeling maybe there was an uncertainty to her loyalty that made her quick to think others might not fully accept her.
Her hope though quickly diminished the moment Redlight trotted up to her side, her fur beginning to prickle and her blood begin to boil with anger again. Redlight wasted no time in speaking and she rolled her eyes at first before fixing her gaze on him for a long moment, her eyes full of anger and weariness. "And you don't think I don't worry about my own kin just because I'm in the clans and they are not? My siblings were all I had when I came to this land Redlight, and not being clan-born tends to make you a little self-conscious at any implication of loyalties not being where they need to. So yes, I will be rather weary when loyalty is mentioned." Russetflight growled towards him, coming to a stop as her gaze remained cold for a long moment.
Her tailed curled though, ears back, and she finally let out a sigh, allowing her slowly bristling fur to lie flat and trying to calm her nerves. "But, I suppose you have a point. It wasn't right for me to take such a low blow, and I'll admit I crossed the line." She muttered softly, sitting back on her haunches as her tailed curled over her paws. "Though, the part of getting to know your clanmates isn't exactly unjustified Redlight. It wouldn't hurt you to have a friend, or someone to be there if you need them. But maybe that's something we both have a problem with: trusting someone else with our problems." Tags: γββπππ§ππ£ππ π£πββγβ’ Notes: Holy cow, almost 20 days...sorry for that slow response.

rΡdlΓght I make myself out to be an angel, but you'll find me just a devil capped in gold
TAG: @tundra . WORDS: 555. NOTES: It's fine, Tun XD
The red warrior choked on a laugh that he stubbornly held down, knowing that if anything was inappropriate for this conversation, it was humor. He...had friends, he thought? Maybe. He had gotten pretty close to that medicine cat shecat.. Mothflight was it? He spoke to her on a.... Daily basis. Maybe. He thought....
'Maybe she just struck a chord, mousebrain. You've possibly just met someone that has almost the exact same problems as you do, and you're messing it up with that idiotic mouth of yours.'
His self-conscious wasn't doing him any favors, and he felt a low, soft growl rip through the laugh caught in his throat, shoving it out and mixing with it, causing a weird gurgling, high-pitched growl-like sound to expand into the air between him and Russetflight.
Immediately, his ears warmed in embarrassment of the sound, and he frowned, coughing slightly.
"Er.. I'm sorry. I know how it feels to worry over family, and I again..... I stepped over my limitations, and I was a tad harsh... Concerning everything. So here's my sincerest of apologies, Russetflight, all of my accusations were false and mistakes, and I apologize for suggesting you or your littermates were anything if loyal to the selective groups or homes that they're in."
His voice was gruff and strained, as if it almost pained the narcissistic tom to be apologizing, but he hated drama between clanmates with a passion, and he wasn't about to be the cause of a major problem with himself and one of the pivotal warriors of Kestrelclan. He'd like to keep his fur on his body next time he crossed Echostar or Mothflight, thanks.
He huffed, thinking about the last statement that had gotten him all riled up in the beginning. Maybe he should let someone past his walls for once, instead of giving them his cocky shell to deal with. He was sure it would relieve some of his clanmates to know he wasn't a total jerk all the time, but... it was hard, letting someone in on your secrets and weaknesses. Letting others in on the actual cat you were was dangerous, and almost never led to good things, in his experience.
"I... guess I'm not the best at... letting others in, or being nice... or not being so brutally honest that it hurts others.... but it's not the easiest thing in the world to give others major ammo to shoot your life down with. Opening up can be very, very dangerous to one's being, you know. It gives a lot of cats a lot of access to hurting you, and damaging you to where you can't build those walls again, so then everyone gets a shot at a cat that's annoyed them their entire life just because they wouldn't take the time too... Nevermind."
His tone turned from bitter to neutral so fast, the flat tone seemed to be the only tone he had used to those who didn't pay attention. He sat there silently for a few heartbeats, his shoulders stiff as boards, before slumping them down, and drooping his ears for a second.
He sighed, shaking his head and closing his forest colored eyes, frowning slightly as they stood there in the forest surrounding the camp, just out of earshot of the others in the camp or guarding it.

Russetflight The sound Redlight made caused Russetflight to look at him quizzically, wondering exactly that sound was suppose to be. It was nothing she had heard before, and sounded something like a laugh or growl, maybe both or something else entirely and she opened her mouth to see if he was alright before closing her jaws again. No, they had already pressed each others buttons as it was, she didn't want to get her ears torn off for asking something embarrassing. Besides, Redlight already looking embarrassed enough from the sound. Perhaps it was just something that had been unintentional, and something that just came out really wrong.
'I somehow doubt you're entirely sorry.' Russetflight thought to herself, having known Redlight long enough to know being sincere was quite...unlike him. He was too full of himself or too guarded to really show such things and it left her feeling a little uncertain to take that apology seriously or not at the moment. The red warrior seemed strained, struggling to actually get an apology out at all causing the tip of her tail to flick but she held back her disbelief and merely nodded her head, "As I said, I overstepped myself before as well. We're both in the wrong." She kept her tone curt and kind as she could keep it, but deep down a part of her felt like this would be a long standing issue she'd face for sometime despite her the few seasons she had already been with the clan.
Perhaps this time, Redlight was overthinking her own suggestion or she wasn't exactly giving her suggestion in the way she meant to. "Redlight I'm not saying you need to spill out your guts to every cat you've grown some relationship towards." Russetflight pointed out, trying to be a bit more clear this time. "I mean opening up to maybe only one or two cats you can trust or you know you can trust. Not every cat is going to go gossiping about your secrets. There are some cats in this forest who understand individual loyalty as much as loyalty to a clan. Mean let's face it, there are some secrets you can't even tell your clan but they'll eat you up inside if you don't tell someone." She pointed out, not implying that he had secrets he was keeping but maybe have a healthier alternative of someone to talk to or to be there for him when he needed it.
Though the more they talked, the more Russetflight realized the two were probably more alike than she had really noticed before. "But maybe that's the problem with us. We don't trust enough to give ourselves to someone else but enough to defend what we know and how we live. Perhaps we are more alike then we'll admit." The bay cat said, shaking her head slightly wondering if the red tom was also beginning to notice this. Tags: γββπππ§ππ£ππ π£πββγβ’ Notes:These cats have issues XD

Redlight watched her talk, maintaining his even posture even as his shoulders tensed and relaxed, his long, sharp claws digging slightly into the grass. He breathed a sigh as he listened to her advice and return apology, though he heard the uncertainty at first. It wasn't like he judged her for this feeling, he knew he wasn't the first cat the clan expected a... sincere apology out of, and he never really expected anything sincere out of anyone else in the smallish clan. He was far to guarded for his own good. He knew that, but that didn't mean he would change it.
His ears flattened when she suggested he found one or two others to... share his feelings with. What, did she think he needed a therapy of some sort? He wasn't delusional or suicidal, didn't have murderous tenancies towards other clanmates... Why would she think he needed anything or anyone to talk to?
